Sheldon Good addresses UN group on housing.

Sheldon Good, chairman and CEO of the Chicago real estate firm that bears his name, was a featured guest speaker at the observance of World Habitat Day 1992 at the United nations.

Citing the alarming figure of 100 million homeless throughout the world, Good told a gathering of real estate and corporate leaders that federal construction of multi-family buildings alone is not effective.

Good said, "We have to create environments for people in which they can live and work, with low density housing, open space or green areas, playgrounds, community centers with parks, schools and shopping and transportation."

Good said that low-rise rental development and home ownership are preferred methods to stimulate neighborhood development. The private sector can provide affordable housing, according to Good. However, in order for private initiatives to succeed, communities must establish a genuine need for housing; responsible corporate entities and land owners must make affordable land available to developers; and government at local, state and federal levels must offer subsidized financing for home ownership.

Good concluded, "Government agencies within the City of Chicago are making every effort to work with qualified developers with community ties. Together they support the goal of both affordable home ownership and affordable rental housing for citizens and families in the community.

At the United Nations, Good was joined by Professor Marc Weiss of Columbia University; Kenneth Miller, president of the National Committee for Habitat; and Vincent Lane, chairman of the Chicago Housing Authority.
