The executive members of Organisation of Kashmir Coalition (OKC), Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl and Barrister Abdul Majeed Tramboo, have expressed anguish over the deployment of additional 380 companies of Indian paramilitary troops in occupied Kashmir.
Professor Shawl and Barrister Tramboo in a joint statement issued in London said that the world's heaviest militarized zone was further amplified to crush people's legitimate uprising for their basic right to self-determination and fundamental freedoms.
They said that it seemed paradoxical that the desire for peace endorsed during a recent meeting between the US President, Donald Trump, and Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan, was being thwarted.
"Instead of endorsing the mediation offer, which clearly is presented before the international community by the world's powerful President with the compliance of Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the world leaders have witnessed utter anger and arrogance in rejecting the mediation offer, though such rejection has no force," Professor Shawl and Barrister Tramboo added.
They further remarked that just on the heels of recent developments in Washington, Modi's National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, visited Srinagar to further strangulate the democratic space for the peaceful protests and prepare an environment for the removal of the Articles 370 and 35-A of the Indian Constitution. Article 370 grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir while Article 35-A gives special rights to the permanent residents of Kashmir and debars non-Kashmiris from acquiring property in the territory.
"The timing of the move is important and a reflection of the intent of BJP abhorrently rejecting all the peace overtures to save its face and a diplomatic debacle; all the stakeholders particularly the US, UK, China, Russia, EU and OIC need to note the sheer intransigence of India and use their tremendous prowess to address this paralyzing stalemate in the interest of regional peace," Professor Shawl and Barrister Tramboo concluded.
