Shatter to shake up tenant law; LANDLORDS.

JUSTICE Minister Alan Shatter is to reform landlord and tenant law.

And he is prioritising the abolition of upwards-only rent reviews for existing business leaseholders.

The minister said: "Our general landlord and tenant law dates back to Deasy's Act in the middle of the 19th century.

"A modern landlord and tenant code applicable to business tenancies is essential for our economic recovery."

David Fitzsimons of Retail Excellence Ireland said: "Minister Shatter is again to be commended.

"For every month that goes by under the current system, over 400 Irish stores are closing and large numbers of jobs are being lost - more than 45,000 since 2008."
