Sharp's to serve as PGA sponsor during 1991 tour.

Sharp's non-alcoholic brew announced plans to join the Professional Golfers Assn. (PGA) Tour to serve as an official sponsor of several major PGA Tour programs, events and players during the 1991 season.

"Golf offers us a great opportunity to reach our consumers with the message of Sharp's refreshing beer taste without its alcohol,: said Rick Burton, Sharp's brand manager, Miller Brewing Co. "We are very pleased to be able to join with the PGA Tour to bring top golf programs to fans everywhere."

Burton explained that Sharp's will serve as a sponsor in three categories. first, the brand is the official non-alcoholic brew of the tour. As part of that designation, the "Sharp's-Shooter" competition has ben developed to honor those PGA players who score holes-in-one at each stop on the tour. Each player will receive $1,000 while another $1,000 will be donated to the local tournament. Additionally, $1,000 will be donated in the player's name to the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, which offers scholarships to the country's black public colleges and universities.

At season's end, a $1 million Sharp's-Shooter competition will be conducted at the tour championship in Pinehurst, NC, where players who have previously score a hole-in-one or have qualified for the tour championship, will be eligible to take two swings in an attempt to score yet another hole-in-one.

Sharp's will also be involved with the sponsorship of three PGA players in 1991. Scott Gump, Brandt Jobe and Jim McGovern will play in Sharp's-identified clothing and serve as spokespersons at various events.
