Sharjah Ruler attends opening of the 13th GCC Theatre Festival.

During the opening ceremony, Dr Shaikh Sultan was honoured as the Theatre Personality of the Year in the GCC countries.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah attended on Saturday the opening of the13th Edition of the Gulf Theatre Festival of the Civil Troupes, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development.

Present were Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah; Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development; Shaikhs, senior officials, dignitaries, artists and fans.

During the opening ceremony, Dr Shaikh Sultan was honoured as the Theatre Personality of the Year in the GCC countries.

Dr Shaikh Sultan said in a speech that theatre tackles the issue of humans who are always concerned by either conflicts, family, religion, joy and sadness.

Dr Shaikh Sultan also gave an account of his personal journey with theatre and what inspired him to study the drama and to write his works.

"Today, we need a drama work that portrays the encounter between the giant of light and the giant of darkness and ends with the latter being vanquished to signify the victory of science over ignorance, the right over oppression, and the good over evil," he added.

In his speech, Shaikh Nahyan bin Mubarak said the honouring of Dr Shaikh Sultan was a source of pride to all cultural and arts circles in the GCC countries.

"His Highness Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi is an icon of literature and intellect. He is also one of the key theatre writers of our contemporary times," he said.

He welcomed participant theatre companies and guests and wished the festival a rousing success.
