Shares are in upbeat mood.

LONDON shares jumped forward as the upbeat mood in the City pushed the FTSE 100 Index clear of the 5000 barrier.

Banks, pharmaceuticals and media stocks were making big gains in early trading as the market built on yesterday's surge.

After the first hour, the Footsie was up 30.0 points at 5183.1, with hopes of further gains.

A strong session in the US yesterday bolstered spirits late on in London where the Footsie closed up 143.3 points.

Today, the confidence helped high-street banks with Barclays up 59p at pounds 21.06, Lloyds TSB up 8p at 708p, and Royal Bank of Scotland ahead 24p at pounds 16.54.
