Shameless Kate's just a drag on teen girls.

Byline: Fiona McIntosh

* ATE Moss walked down the catwalk in Paris merrily sucking on a fag, and did more for the anti-smoking lobby in five minutes than the Health Department has managed in a decade.

Take a look at that face, kids. If smoking can transform a supermodel into an extra from Shameless, then what's it going to do to you? It's not Kate's looks which are the problem. She is still fabulous, if a little worn around the edges.

It's her "look" which is all wrong because for someone who prides herself on being cool, openly tugging on a fag is not cool at all. Smoking has officially lost its glamour. A fag now looks bad enough hanging from the lips of a 20-year-old, but it looks pathetic on a 37-year-old mother who should know better.

It screams of someone clinging on to her youth and "bad girl" image long after its sell-by date.

That fag says Kate doesn't care about being a role model to all the young women who look up to her, and it doesn't say a lot about the example she is setting her own daughter Lila. Ruin your own health in private, Kate, but don't you dare encourage our daughters to take up a habit which could kill them. By lighting up so publicly on No Smoking Day, Kate Moss has put two fingers up to our kids.

If Kate was struggling to give up smoking in private, then I'd have all the sympathy in the world for her. It's a tough habit to break. Just ask any ex-smoker who battles on a daily basis to bin the cigs.

It's why the NHS is quite rightly pouring millions into antismoking campaigns and pre-scribing patches, pills and whatever else it takes to wean us off the cancer sticks.

It's why cigarettes will soon be banned from display in our shops.

Not that Kate seems to give a toss. In the warped world of fashion, normal rules don't apply. Creating the sort of controversy which will guarantee publicity is all that matters. Who cares if lung cancer is the second-biggest killer of women? Who cares if all those impressionable young girls who adored Kate from her Top Shop days see her puffing away at a habit which is now more common among girls than boys? Who cares about the tragic fact that the earlier you start smoking, the greater chance you have of becoming addicted and of getting smokingrelated diseases? Smoking is the greatest single threat to our national health, yet Kate Moss still thinks it's a laugh to glamorise a habit which has a good chance of killing us.

Ironically, Kate is reportedly trying to give up fags so she has a better chance of conceiving a baby with her rock star fianc Jamie Hince.

I wish her luck. Maybe now it's time for her to finally grow up, kick the habit and admit to all her young fans that sucking on a fag is so last season.
