Shambles shows need for change.

Byline: Jack McConnell Former first minister

Former first ministers Jack McConnell and Henry McLeish have criticised the destructive war between Sturgeon and Salmond.

Both agreed our poll showed support for independence was shifting as a result of the scandal. Here are McConnell's thoughts: I have believed over recent years that a major reason for the increase in support for independence was the shambolic and unprincipled way in which the UK Government was behaving.

So when government in Scotland becomes shambolic and lacking in principle there will be a drop in support for that government.

The public dispute between the First Minister and her predecessor is a whole long way from the founding principles of the Scottish Parliament.

Our Parliament was supposed to be different - more transparent and more accountable than Westminster. Interference in a parliamentary inquiry, accusations of conspiracies and coverups are very serious.

The committee has to get to the truth and everyone, including the First Minister, needs to commit to changing the way the government, the law and the civil servants have become far to close.

Any perception that the Crown Office is not independent is damaging for governance and Scotland's justice system.

So even if this accusation is not true, the First Minister and the Lord Advocate must take action that proves they are beyond this perception in the future.
