Shakespeare.

SO which of Shakespeare's characters will earn permanent pride of place at Newcastle Theatre Royal in the form of a specially commissioned bronze statue? The competition to find the North East's favourite Shakespeare character goes on with votes flying in on a daily basis.

Latest word from the theatre, which is hosting the competition with The Journal, is that Hamlet, the indecisive Prince of Denmark, has crept into the lead. Will he hold that lead? It is entirely in your hands. To vote for one of the characters on the shortlist drawn up by experts from Newcastle and Durham universities, go to www.journallive.co.uk/culture and click on the Shakespeare link.

You will also be able to vote for your Shakespeare play. Currently in pole position is A Midsummer Night's Dream. The competition closes on April 23 next year, Shakespeare's birthday. You can keep track of it each Wednesday in The Journal.
