Shafallah lab first in Qatar to get CAP accredition.

LANI ROSE R DIZON DOHA THE Diagnostic Molecular Genetics Laboratory (DMGL) at the Shafallah Medical Genetics Center (SMGC) has become the first-ever medical laboratory in Qatar to be accredited by the prestigious College of American Pathologists (CAP). The College of American Pathologists is the biggest medical association in the world and is widely considered as the leader in laboratory quality assurance.

Following the successful accreditation process, the Shafallah Medical Genetics Center Diagnostic laboratory is now one of the more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories in the world. Addressing the media on Monday, Dr Khalid bin Jabor al Thani, chairman of the Qatar National Cancer Society and a member of the Shafallah board of directors, said, "It was a long process to get to this level and we are now the one and only CAP-accredited institution in Qatar and among the very few in the region.

This will open doors for more global collaborations as the laboratory is now a reference centre for diagnostic tests that is recognised for its high international standards." Speaking about the accreditation process, SMGC Managing Director Dr Hatem el Shanti said, "The CAP inspectors examined the laboratory's records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years.

They also examined the laboratory staff qualifications, as well as the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety programme and record, in addition to the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection programme is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients." The SMGC functions as a diagnostic laboratory centre which provides medical genetics services to children with special needs and their families in Qatar.

The centre also conducts professional and community- based education, and pursues active research on various illnesses, disabilities and genetic disorders. During the event, about 30 staff members at the SMGC, who participated in the accreditation process were recognised and awarded for their efforts. Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, Dr el Shanti said, "We are now at a stage where we can offer to the Hamad Medical Corporation the tests that we perform in a CAP-accredited laboratory.

Before this accreditation, a lot of the tests required in Qatar are sent outside because they are tests done for rare disorders and only few laboratories do them. Now all physicians in Qatar have a reference laboratory that functions at stringent international standards that is just around the corner".
