Sexual assault agency to reduce service hours.

Byline: The Register-Guard

Sexual Assault Support Services, the Eugene nonprofit agency that provides outreach, advocacy and support to survivors of sexual violence, as well as their partners, families and friends, is reducing its hours of service because of a reduction in funding.

Starting today, SASS will close its Drop-In Advocacy services on Mondays and Fridays. Those services will still be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays at its office at 591 W. 19th Ave.

The agency's 24-hour crisis line is always available by calling 541-343-7277.

The reduction in hours is happening to allow SASS to maintain the best possible services with limited resources, the agency said in a press release.

"Although this past year's increase in state funding through the Oregon Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Fund has certainly helped, like many other local service providers, SASS has seen a decrease in funding from other sources over the past few years," said BB Beltran, SASS's executive director.

"Given our current capacity, the best course of action is to reduce the hours of our Drop In Advocacy services," Beltran said.

"I am confident that SASS will continue to provide the essential support survivors that their partners, friends and family need."

The agency was founded in 1991 in response to the need for services in Lane County specific to sexual assault.

The agency works with other organizations and institutions such as Womenspace,

Lane County Legal Aid & Advocacy Center and the University of Oregon to increase awareness and inform residents about the issues of sexual assault.
