Sex abuser Cairney in freedom bid.

Byline: KEITH MCLEOD

CELTIC Boys' Club child abuser Frank Cairney has launched a new bid for freedom ahead of his appeal.

Cairney, 84, was denied bail by the appeal court in May, when his lawyer said he was in poor health.

A hearing next Thursday will now consider a new application for release before his appeal, set to be heard later in the year.

Cairney was jailed for four years in February for a catalogue of sexual abuse against children over 20 years, including at Celtic FC's Barrowfield training ground, while a football coach and then manager at Celtic Boys' Club.

He is one of four former Celtic Boys' Club coaches to be convicted of child sex abuse in recent months.
