Seven-up Phelps is stunned.

WINNING gold medals is like collecting stamps for Michael Phelps, but he admitted he even stunned himself after claiming a record-equalling seventh in Beijing in dramatic fashion. The US swimming sensation had to produce a desperate last lunge to seal victory in the 100m butterfly final at the Water Cube yesterday.Victory allowed him to draw level with fellow American legend Mark Spitz, who set the record of seven golds at one Games in Munich in 1972.It also keeps him on course for Olympic immortality when he goes for a record eighth gold in the 4x100m medley relay, an event in which the US team are unbeaten and hold the world record.PhelpsCO record bid appeared to have been derailed when he was seventh at the turn in yesterdayCOs race. But he stormed back to clinch a finger-tip victory as he was awarded gold over SerbiaCOs Milorad Cavic by just one-hundredth of a second.Serbia protested the result of the race, but a frame by frame replay confirmed Phelps was the winner. And Phelps said: C[pounds sterling]When I did take that extra half stroke I thought ICOd lost the race. ICOm really sort of lost for words.C[pounds sterling]I feel a little bit of everything - relief, excitement, everything.C[pounds sterling]I had to take my goggles off to make sure the Cy1CO was next to my name,C[yen] he added.C[pounds sterling]One-hundredth is the smallest margin of victory in our sport and itCOs pretty cool, thatCOs all I can say.C[yen]

Meanwhile, BritainCOs Rebecca Adlington shattered the longest-standing world record with a sensational victory in the womenCOs 800m freestyle for her second gold medal. The 19-year-old freestyler, from Mansfield in England, lopped 2.12secs off American Janet EvansCO 19-year world mark in a time of eight mins, 14.10 secs, a record that had stood since 1989.AdlingtonCOs spectacular success followed her victory in the 400m freestyle.C[pounds sterling]If anyone would have said before the Games that ICOd win two golds and break the world record, ICOd have laughed in their face, I never thought it,C[yen] laughed Adlington.C[pounds sterling]ItCOs (record) always been a goal of mine. C[pounds sterling]I heard she (Evans) is here and it would be really nice to meet her.C[yen]
