Seven-day anti-polio campaign begins in Karachi.

KARACHI -- A seven-day anti-polio campaign began in Karachi on Monday. Commissioner Karachi Ifitkhar Shawllani inaugurated it at Rural Health Centre, Baldia. Deputy Commissioner West Zahid Hussain Memon, DHO, Baldia Dr Shafiq, Mufti Kabeer Mangal of Madarsa Maaz bin Jabal, Mufti Haafizullah Rehmani of Jaamia Mehmoodia, representatives of the international partners, officials of health departments and others were present on this occasion.The under the campaign, which will conclude on 23 June, more than 1.5 million children will be administered anti-polio drops in 105 union councils. More than 7,000 polio teams have been deputed for performing their duties in the campaign. Commissioner, who is also the chairman of the Task Force formed by the Sindh government for the eradication of polio, briefed about the details of the campaign to the media at a inauguration campaign held at RHC, Baldia.

Talking to media, he said that in 2019, Pakistan had reported 23 cases of polio out of which three were reported from Sindh and out of Sindh, 2 cases were reported from Karachi (Layari and Gulshan). The target population for this campaign is 1.5 million under-five children to be vaccinated in 105 Union Councils of Karachi.

The 7660 teams and 1814 area supervisors and UCMOs had been deployed to vaccinate house to house children, while 3266 policemen to accompany teams shoulder to shoulder while rangers have been deputed for patrolling, sources told.

Commissioner said that all out efforts were being made to achieve the target to administer the polio drops to each and every child of 5 years and below. He said religious and community leaders had also been taken on board. He thanked the Mufti Kabir Mengal and Mufti Haafizullah Rehmani for their cooperation and support to help the administration to pursue the parents so that the polio teams could reach all the children to administrator the polio drops and efforts to eradicate the polio could be successful.
