Negotiators for BASF Corp.'s Fiber Division and Local 815 of the United Textile Workers reached agreement on a new 3-year contract covering some 1,800 employees at the synthetic fiber and yarn-manufacturing plant in Lowland, TN. The agreement calls for wage increases of 50 cents an hour in January 1992, and 30 cents an hour in January 1993 and 1994. The cost-of-living adjustment clause provides for additional wage increases in the second and third years of the contract to the extent of any rise in the Consumer Price Index for Wage Earners and Clerical Workers above 2.5 percent in 1992 and above 2.4 percent in 1993.

At the expiration of the previous contract, the average hourly rate was $10.50, according to the union.

Other terms include a $4 increase, to $18, over the term of the contract in the monthly pension rate for each year of credited service; increases from $10,000 to $20,000 in life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment insurance benefits; an increase in maximum lifetime medical benefits from $500,000 to $1 million; an increase in the maximum weekly accident and sickness benefit from $155 to $255; and increases over the term of the contract in employees' weekly copayments for health insurance premiums, from $2.70 to $12.30 for single coverage and from $3.50 to $13.10 for family coverage.
