Servicemembers' rights discussed.

Legislation (S 3179) to expand the protections currently available to militaty personnel under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) has been introduced in Congress. Currently, servicemembers who are deployed or given transfer orders can terminate a lease without penalty. Under the proposed measure, servicemembers would also be able to terminate a lease early and without penalty when base housing becomes available.

NAA/NMFIC are currently assessing the bill's effect on the industry and are reaching out to appropriate congressional offices for additional information. The hill may be added to the pending FY 2013 Defense Department authorization bill (S 2467) currently working its way through the Senate. The House-passed version of the defense authorization measure (HR 4310) did not include the lease termination provision.
