Service offering support.

OLDER people in need of a helping hand are being urged to contact a Redcar service.

Helping Hands For You sees volunteers pop around to an elderly person's home to offer anything from day-to-day help to simple companionship.

Set up in 2005, the service currently has more than 100 members and offers coffee mornings and lunch clubs three days a week, regular day trips, outings and even holidays.

The service also offers home support with tasks like shopping, gardening, DIY, decorating and dog walking, being carried out.

Co-ordinator Margaret Maclaren said the service aimed to "enable independence, empower choice and promote the dignity we would wish for ourselves".

She said: "With more than 100 members, and receiving referrals from other agencies daily, our services are in demand because of the cutbacks to older people services throughout the borough.

"We welcome older people to join us and always need volunteers throughout the borough to support the service users who need our help." [bar] For details about the service, call Margaret Maclaren or assistant Carole McQuade on 01642 774449 or 07760 617131.
