Senior Insurgent killed in operation.

KABUL (PAN): A senior insurgent, Mullah Abdul Bari, was killed in southern Afghanistan the other day in a counter Improvised Explosive Device (IED) operation conducted by the Afghan National Army (ANA) and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

The known IED and suicide bomb facilitator was located by ANA and ISAF soldiers on Wednesday morning. A short battle followed which left Bari and two of his accomplices dead.

The area had been under surveillance for some time preceding the operation in order to protect Afghan civilians. Bari had been identified as a primary IED facilitator, and was responsible for the coordination of IED emplacement in Uruzgan province. The removal of Bari will help reduce the number of IEDs and make the area safer for the people of Afghanistan, said Brigadier-General Richard Blanchette, ISAF Spokesperson. This joint operation also demonstrates the steadily increasing capabilities of the ANA.
