Senator Receives Beacon Award

Senator Steve Symms (R-ID) received ASAE's Beacon Award--an annual award that honors an individual who has taken significant policy actions to encourage and enhance opportunities for U.S. associations. Symms received the award at a special recognition breakfast June 6 during ASAE's 10th Annual Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C.

Symms has been instrumental in efforts to allow all U.S. associations to provide 401(k) benefits to their employees. A law enacted in 1986 now prevents many nonprofit organizations from starting such tax-deferred savings plans. For-profit and private-sector employers are not subject to these restrictions.

Symms recently introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate that would reinstate the right of all nonprofit organizations to offer 401(k) plans.
