ISLAMABAD -- Sub-Committee of Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication Tuesday directed the information technology ministry, PTCL and PTET to immediately release pension and arrears of the retired employees.
The committee further directed the ministry, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) and Pakistan Telecommunication Employees Trust (PTET) that the arrears/pension should be released before Eid so that poor old employees could get some benefit.
The committee meeting headed by Convener Senator Engr Rukhsana Zuberi was also attended by the Senators Abdul Rehman Malik and Kalsoom Parveen, Joint Secretary Ministry of Information Technology, Managing Director of PTET, Chief Executive Officer of PTCL.
It was suggested by the committee that the PTCL can provide pension in category-wise on the basis of age of retired employees.
On the demand of the officials of the ministry, PTCL and PTET, the committee gave its recommendations to the government for provision of funds to the institution urgently.
The PTCL and PTET officials said the institutions have to face shortfall of Rs40 billion in case of providing pensions and arrears to the retired employees which can halt the ongoing projects.
It was also recommended by the committee that the salaries of the retired pensioners should be fixed as per law. The arrears can be provided into periods.
The committee was informed that around 40,000 retired employees of the PTCL are waiting for their arrears from 2010.
Referring the Supreme Court decision in favor of the PTCL pensioners, Senator Rehman Malik said the committee would take further action if its directions would not be followed.
Senator Kasoom Parveen said it is difficult for the PTCL, PTET to provide all arrears in one time so they should be given specific time period to complete the task.
On the direction of committee, the officials of the PTCL, PTET assured to follow its recommendations in letter and spirit.
