Sempra US Gas & Power, a developer of renewable energy and natural gas solutions, has expanded a 100-megawatt Mesquite Solar complex in Arlington, Arizona.

The project is to be completed in late 2016, and the expansion, called Mesquite Solar 2, will produce enough power for 45,000 homes.

The entire production of the Mesquite Solar 2 expansion has been sold to Southern California Edison under a 20-year power purchase contract. The agreement is subject to approval by the California Public Utilities Commission. Construction on Mesquite Solar 2 is likely to begin this autumn. The project is to create hundreds of construction jobs, part of a multi-phase expansion that will employ about 600 workers at peak. The 4,000-acre Mesquite Solar complex is claimed to be among the largest photovoltaic solar facilities in the United States. By late 2016, the complex's three phases are likely to produce a total of 400 MW.
