Semico Awards Prestigious Bellwether Award to Walden Rhines.

Business Editors & Technology Writers

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2002

Semico Research Corp. today announced Walden Rhines, chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics, as the recipient of Semico's 2002 Bellwether Award.

Each year the Semico Bellwether Award is presented to an executive for their outstanding contribution to the semiconductor industry. The award was presented at Semico's annual conference, the Semico Summit 2002, at which Rhines also gave the keynote address.

Rhines' keynote address focused on changes in the semiconductor industry; describing a basic phenomenon known as disruptive technology that causes radical shifts in a market. Between these disruptive shifts, companies tend to focus on improving the then current technology to remain competitive and gain market share.

Then, when a disruptive technology appears, the existing companies often ignore it, leading to the emergence of totally new companies serving the market.

During his 20-year career at Texas Instruments, Rhines was influential in the growth and development of TI into one of the top semiconductor companies in the world. Since 1993, Rhines has transformed Mentor Graphics into an industry leading EDA company; providing design tools that allow the semiconductor industry to take advantage of advances in process technology.

Mentor's support and EDA tools for the programmable logic market has allowed this emerging technology to radically change design engineers choices for semiconductor chips used in new, innovative products.

"We believe that Mentor Graphics' new products will continue to improve the efficiency of the design process and help drive semiconductor innovation," said Jim Feldhan, president, Semico Research Corp.
