Select on form; COMMENT & DEBATE YOUR LETTERS TO THE NATIONAL NEWSPAPER OF WALES.

SIR - I believe that Roger Lewis has been an effective chief executive of the WRU but his comments reported in the Western Mail regarding "vultures" picking off Welsh players "like pieces of meat" is emotive and lacks analysis of whether there is indeed a problematic area at all ("Lydiate off to France as WRU bemons 'vultures'", Dec 6).

The WRU desire to see the top Welsh players within our regional system lacks an explanation of why this is desirable. We have four regional sides which gives us four players for each position for selection.

At least one of the four is probably non-Welsh qualified, so we have only three for each position. With the exception of Gethin Jenkins, Welsh players in France, and England, are plying their trade at the highest possible level.

None of these players are more than an hour flight from Cardiff and as long as they negotiate release for squad sessions what on earth is the problem? We have an excellent academy system but player development is not helped by spending months on the replacement bench. Look how the Scarlets have developed a three-quarter line from local talent.

Surely we don't need reminding that Argentina and Samoa don't even have a high level domestic set-up. Their players are spread throughout the world and it certainly isn't causing them a problem.

I think Roger Lewis could better spend his time explaining why our selectors did not give James Hook an autumn outing at outside half and why when the whole of Wales could see some of our top players were out of form that they thought this would resolve itself on the international field. It is amazing the number of coaches who say they select on form and then don't do it.
