This report was produced in response to a request from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Institute of Medicine to convene an expert committee to assess the state of the science on the relationship between secondhand-smoke exposure and acute coronary events. The report reviews the epidemiological, clinical, and experimental literature with an emphasis on the evidence of causality and knowledge gaps that future research should address. It focuses on the association between secondhand smoke exposure and coronary heart disease, the association between secondhand-smoke exposure and acute coronary events, and the association between smoking bans and acute coronary events.
