Seashore life of the Northern Pacific Coast.

Next time you head out to any coastal beach between Point Conception (near Santa Barbara) and northern British Columbia, come prepared with sturdy shoes for a shoreline walk and a copy of a new book that describes the creatures that thrivein the these chilly waters. Seashore Life of the Northern Pacific Coast: An Illustrated Guide to Northern California, Oregon, Washinton, and British Columbia, by Eugene Kozloff (University of Washington Press, Seattle, 1983; $19.95 paperback, $40 harbound), is brimming with useful information.

The book's heavy weight, glossy paper makes it tough enough to go in a pack or picnic basket and withstand smudges from sandy, salt-watered fingers. Good color and black-and-white photographs will help fine-tune your identification skills. Chapter 2, "Some Instant Zoology and Botany," makes easy, informative reading before you get to the beach. Other chapters take you from pilings to rocky shores and on to salt marshes, with many surprises along the way.

If the bok isn't available in your bookstore, send a check for the cost of the book plus $1.50 for postage and handling to University of Washington Press, Box 85569, Seattle 98145.
