HIT TV show Pop Idol is to be launched in the US.

The American version will be produced by former Spice Girl boss Simon Fuller and his 19 TV company.

The winner will clinch a deal with music giants BMG as well as a cash prize.

Viewers and judges will narrow down a pool of around 10,000 would-be stars to a field of 50 candidates, who finally become 10.

Gail Berman, boss of American TV firm Fox Entertainment, said: "America is full of incredibly talented performers looking for their first break.

"With this new series, we will fulfil a lot of dreams and let our viewers make someone a superstar.

"People have a vested interest in the programme, in seeing their candidate win. It's almost like a presidential campaign."

Will Young, who emerged as British pop idol last month, saw his first single break all existing sales records for a debut in its first week of release.
