BERNARD Westgarth caught a variety of species to win the first of the Saltburn club's Winter League matches.

From Whitby he tempted 13 rockling, two eels, two coley and a bass, caught on peeler crab and worm, to total 7lb 13.25oz to win the Pilkington Cup in a match in which six of seven weighed in.

Gary Moody was runner-up with five flounder for 3lb 6.75oz from Upgang. Guy Mason caught the biggest fish of the match, a bass of 1lb 12.25oz, which took ragworm ledgered 50 yards out behind the third breaker at Agar's Gap.

The match was fished from 6-10pm over high water, and tomorrow's second round takes place at the same time.

* CHRIS Wood won the St Mary's rover with seven flounder from Whitby Harbour - including the biggest fish of the match at 12.5oz - for 4lb 6oz.

John Fairbridge was runner-up with two whiting for 1lb, and Dale Miller third. He caught three rockling for 15oz.

Tomorrow's rover is from 6-10pm. Meet at the Boys Club from 4.45-5pm. * BASS are around, while mackerel are showing from the piers and Gare, with occasional thornback from Saltburn Pier.

Boat anglers are catching cod and ling to 20lb, while a 19lb conger has been caught offshore.
