Sculpture: Technique, Form, Content.

SCULPTURE: TECHNIQUE, FORM, CONTENT. Arthur Williams. Worcester, MA: Davis Publications, Inc., 1989. Illustrated, 360 pp., hardbound. $39.95.

The fourteen chapters of this large and abundantly illustrated book seem to investigate almost every media and process available to the sculptor or sculpture student. Following a succinct but noteworthy introduction to the origins and analytic fundamentals of sculpture, the author guides us through extensive examinations of clay, plaster, stone, wood, metals, plastics, paper and mixed media. Within these chapters we explore modeling, moldmaking, carving, casting, fabrication, assemblage and other techniques. Accompanying photos--by the hundreds--show tools, preparatory steps, studio facilities, works in process and finished examples. Other chapters address possible careers in sculpture and how to prepare for exhibitions. An appendix presents a bibliography and popular sources for tools and materials--from adhesives to wax melting pots. An all-inclusive book recommended for artists and teachers interested in the art form of sculpture.
