Scuffles, rigging charges: Polls of three district bars postponed.
SARGODHA -- The annual elections of the district bar associations (DBAs) were postponed in Sargodha, Gujranwala and Faisalabad over scuffles between lawyers' groups and rigging allegations on Saturday.
Lawyers scuffled with each other during the DBA election at Sargodha. The ballots were torn, lists of voters were burnt and ballot boxes forcibly lifted. Police reached the venue and locked the polling booth.
When over seven dozen votes were deleted from the list, differences started between two candidates, Malik Shafqat Abbas and Hammad Haroon. A complaint was filed with the Pakistan Bar Council which directed vice chairman of the Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) to resolve the issue.
Now the election will be held on Jan 20. The decision was made in meeting of DBA office-bearers, PBC member and the contesting candidates. PbBC observer Faiz Warriach chaired the meeting.
GUJRANWALA: The annual election of the DBA was postponed due to a scuffle between the lawyers and candidates.
As soon as polling started at 9am, a lawyer was seen having two ballots. The polling agent of Noor Muhammad Mirza caught him and raised an alarm. While the supporters of bar's current president, Naserullah Gill, and other office-bearers also came there, the groups started scuffling with each other.
At this, election commissioner Chaudhry Dawood postponed the election.
FAISALABAD: The DBA election has been postponed after the rivals traded allegations of rigging against each other.
Now the Punjab Bar Council (PbBC) will hold the election under its supervision and schedule of new polling day is yet to be announced.
Three candidates, Khushal Gujjar, Amjad Malik and Abid Maqbool, were contesting for the president slot. The polling continued till at 3:30 when it was stopped due to rigging allegations.
Former secretary bar told Dawn that election commission chairman Rashid Gujjar had referred the matter to the PbBC following the rigging complaints.
Meanwhile, the elections were held in the district and tehsil bars of Gujrat, Chichawatni, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Toba Tek Singh and Sheikhupura.
Two held: Two suspects wanted in the murder of a woman of Tasawarabad, Bhalwal, were arrested on Saturday.
District Police Officer Chaudhry Muhammad Sohail told reporters the suspects had tried to assault a woman after she turned down the proposal of one of the suspects. When the woman raised alarm, they strangulated her to death and fled.
