Bob Gerrard, executive vice president and general counsel at Scripps Networks, which owns Home & Garden Television, Food Network, DIY--Do It Yourself Network, Fine Living, and Shop At Home Network, knows first-hand from his lifetime of experiences both as mentee and mentor how powerful it can be in shaping careers, empowering people, and defining values.
As a young professional in 1982, Gerrard found a role model in Stan Thomas when Thomas hired him at HBO, then a startup cable network. As Gerrard's mentor, Thomas shaped Gerrard both professionally and personally, and provided a foundation upon which to guide a successful career.
"Stan's way with people, his humor, and keen business sense were qualities he had in abundance," said Gerrard. "What I learned from Stan was how to get the very best from people by understanding what was important to them--and marrying up those interests with those of the corporation."
Today the Short Hills, N.J., resident is the person providing inspiration and direction to young professionals, particularly those of color, just as Thomas did for him. As a mentor, Gerrard is a champion of diversity within the cable industry, sharing insights and carving out unique opportunities tar young executives who demonstrate a desire and passion to excel.
One such individual is Lenore Washington-Graham, a woman with whom he first worked at The Sega channel in the early 1990s. Fast-forward to today: Lenore is the vice president of strategic resourcing at Scripps Networks, where she leads the company's diversity initiatives.
In May 2004, the National Association of Minorities in Cable (NAMIC) honored Gerrard with a fitting tribute: "The Stanley B. Thomas Lifetime Achievement Award." The perennial honor is named his late mentor, friend and colleague to recognize a tenured industry professional who has accomplished significant status in the industry--and who has demonstrated involvement and support for issues affecting people of color.
It was a powerful moment for Gerrard, who calls it "one of the highlights of his career." From mentee to mentor, Gerrad has come full circle, and he serves as an shining example of the power of mentoring.
