Scottish Power guide to winter energy savings.

INSULATION - Proper insulation stops up to 25% of the heat in a house disappearing through the roof, and a further 35% being lost through the walls

Did you know? The amount of heat lost in UK homes annually, through loft spaces and walls, is enough to heat five million homes for a year

Lighting - One energy-saving light bulb uses up to 80% less electricity than an ordinary bulb, and saves pounds 7 a year

If every household in the UK fitted just one low energy light bulb, enough electricity would be saved to power lighting in three millions homes for a year

Washing - Washing clothes at 40C instead of 60C can cut electricity consumption by up to a third

Cooking - Microwaves are a fast, simple and cheap way to cook, using between 70% and 90% less energy than an electric oven

Switch it off - Turning off your TV, video and hi-fi instead of leaving them on standby can save up to 60% of the electricity used playing music or watching television

Did you know? Every year, TVs and videos left on standby in the UK consume enough electricity to power the Black pool illuminations continuously for 10 years

An incredible 95% of the energy used by mobile phone chargers is wasted when the charger is plugged into the wall but not switched off at the socket

Hot water - For around only pounds 10, insulate your hot water cylinder with a lagging jacket - it should pay for itself in less than a year!

Appliances - Replacing your old electrical appliances with those rated A or above for energy efficiency cuts down on harmful CO2 emissions and could save you money on running costs

Keep the draughts out - Closing curtains and blinds at dusk keeps the heat in and can save you between pounds 10 and pounds 15 a year in heating bills

Did you know? For every 1 degree you turn your thermostat down by, you can cut your fuel bill by up to 10%
