MORE than 1,000 entries were received by the organisers of an Instagram photography competition celebrating the region.

Now judges have chosen a shortlist and an overall winner of the #onlyinmerseyside contest, run by the Walker Art Gallery and aimed at gallery visitors and ECHO readers.

Entrants were asked to capture the vibrancy, beauty and humour that surrounds us in Merseyside.

The competition was inspired by the Walker's current exhibition, Only in England: Photographs by Tony Ray-Jones and Martin Parr, running to June 7, which contains more than 100 humorous yet melancholic images reflecting English customs and identity.

The competition asked people to take inspiration from the exhibition and to capture the unique character of Merseyside. From shots of our famous landmarks to candid street photography, many of the entries presented the city in a unique way.

The task of choosing a winner fell to National Museums Liverpool exhibitions officer Nicola Cunningham, who has worked closely on the exhibition. She says: "We were overwhelmed by the quantity of images that we received in such a short space of time.

"Merseyside has an incredibly unique character which many of the entrants were able to present through interesting and beautiful shots.

"However, when selecting a winner, I was looking for a photograph that 'captured a moment',' in the way that so many of Ray-Jones's photographs do."

The winning entry belongs to Scott Spencer, who photographed Billy Wizz barber's shop, in Kirkby town centre, just at the right moment.

Nicola says: "The winning photograph depicts an everyday scene. Nothing remarkable about two men casually walking past a barbers, but for the fact that they are both missing their own hair!

"Two seconds later and the wonderful irony of the moment would have been lost." The winning image and the final shortlist are on display in the resource area of the free exhibition.
