Scots folk great dies.

Legendary Scots folk singer Hamish Imlach died yesterday.

He had been watching the John Lennon film Imagine on TV with a drink in one hand and a herbal cigarette in the other.

Weighing more than 20 stones and only 5ft 6ins, 56-year-old Hamish was one of the most distinctive figures on the world folk scene.

Last night, Archie Fisher, presenter of BBC Scotland's Travelling Folk programme, paid tribute to Hamish, of Motherwell, Lanarkshire.

He said: "He was a pioneer of the humorous side of folk music.

"He paved the way for people like Billy Connolly ."

Folk singer and radio DJ Bill Barclay said: "Hamish was one of the all- time greats. He opened a lot of doors for me at the beginning of my career."

And Ronnie Simpson, boss of Lismore Records, said: "Hamish lived life to the full."

The Imlach brand of singing became popular throughout the world and he toured with people like Billy Connolly and Eric Clapton.

He was best known for his song Cod Liver Oil And Orange Juice .
