Schubert: Choral Works. John Eliot Gardiner, Monteverdi Choir. Philips 289 454 428-2.

After several successful forays into the world of instrumental music, I'd say it's nice to have John Eliot Gardiner back in the choral works with which he made his name. But this album's recording date is 1994 and only just released in 1998, so I guess it's been languishing somewhere for reasons comprehensible, I'm sure, only to Philips. Nevertheless, these performances of 12 partsongs for male and female voices are as filled with sweetness and light as one could imagine from Schubert. Only the sound gives occasion for minor concern, at once open and full, yet a bit dark in the lower registers and slightly hard and bright in the upper ranges. It's a small cavil with singing as lovely as this.
