School principal gunned down; arms seized

JALALABAD (PAN): Unidentified gunmen shot dead a school principal late Sunday night in the eastern Nangarhar province, bordering Pakistan's tribal region of Khyber Agency, officials said on Monday.

Dr. Ajmal Pardes, head of the Jalalabad Civil Hospital, told Pajhwok Afghan News Principal Safiullah succumbed to the injuries he suffered in the attack. The doctor added the headmaster's teenaged daughter, also wounded in the incident, was in a stable condition.

Police spokesman Col. Abdul Ghafoor said five people had been nabbed on suspicion of firing on the principal's house in the Charbagh Safa village of Surkhrod district. With police probing the attack, Education Director Muhammad Iqbal blamed it on robbers.

In the southeastern Paktia province, security officials claimed recovering a number of heavy and light weapons from insurgents following a clash early on Monday. The 203rd Thunder Military Corps spokesman, Col. Muhammad Gul, said that five rockets, four machine-guns and a Klashnikov were seized in the Garda Serai district.
