Scholarship to honor Kontos.

The Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society has named one of its three scholarships The Emmanuel M. Kontos Scholarship, in honor of the late scientist and professor.

Kontos' career at Crompton/Uniroyal Chemical spanned 44 years. Kontos was also professor of polymer chemistry at Southern Connecticut State University. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society and worked tirelessly in the Rubber Division in support of education.

This month, the Rubber Division will award the first $5,000 Kontos Scholarship to Kathleen 1. Frank, a senior studying robber technology at Ferris State University. Frank is the current president of the Ferris State Student Chapter of the Rubber Division.

Kontos is remembered as both a consummate scientist and a passionate son of Greece. He held several patents in EP(D)M science, and published and lectured extensively on synthetic rubber. Kontos is remembered as a proud Greek with a rich knowledge of history, culture and tradition, who once prepared a bountiful Greek breakfast for business guests.

"He was so proud of Greece, he ran a road race with a tunic on," recalls Kontos' longtime friend and colleague Russ Mazzeo, a recently retired senior research scientist in rubber chemicals at Crompton who knew Kontos from his first days at Uniroyal Chemical, in 1963, when he became his assistant.

Dr. Kontos received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1955, and his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Columbia University, New York, in 1959.

He joined Uniroyal's Chemical Division in 1959 as an EP(D)M research chemist. He became group leader in 1963 of synthetic robber and latex research, and in 1966 was appointed manager of Polymer Physics at Uniroyal's Corporate Research Center. In 1973, he was promoted to group manager of Product and Process Development of Uniroyal's Tire Division. In 1976, he returned to the Chemical Division, and since 1982 was an Associate Director of Elastomers Technology. Before his retirement, he was responsible for the technology and licensing of the New Business Development group for the Performance Chemicals and Elastomers Division.

Dr. Kontos was a past vice chairman of the Rubber Division, and was chairman of the Gordon Research Conference on Elastomers in 1982.

Kontos died on October 21, 2002, only a short time after his retirement.
