Scholarship for people in the pig industry.

PEOPLE working in the pig farming sector have less than a fortnight to apply for this year's Nuffield Scholarship award.

The Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust (NFST) is looking for applications from people aged 22 to 45 by November 15.

The British Pig Executive (Bpex) and Merial Animal Health are sponsoring the pig industry scholarship this year.

The current industry scholar Richard Hooper's research is entitled the Recruitment, Training and Retention of Quality Staff in the Pig Industry. He said: "I started in the US, visiting pig businesses ranging from 40 sows to more than 100,000, along with non-agricultural businesses, universities and levy and government-funded bodies. My next visit is to Canada."

Bpex chairman Stewart Houston said: "Developing new knowledge, skills and research is vital to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the pig industry.

"Sponsoring a Nuffield Scholarship is a fantastic way to support enthusiastic pig people wanting to bring benefits to the industry as a whole."

Around 30 Nuffield scholarships are awarded annually to people carrying out research on an agricultural or rural theme.

The programme provides travel and subsistence costs over eight weeks and the scholars are each expected to produce a written paper and presentation of their findings at the NFST's Winter Conference.

An application form for a 2010 scholarship can be downloaded from the Nuffield website at www.nuffieldscholar.
