Byline: Arab News

RIYADH: Schneider Electric showed nerves of steel in a notomorrow contest against SBAHC (Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City) to score a 67-61 victory and capture the title in the Zahid Tractor Central Region 16th Cup basketball tournament before a jampacked crowd at the Zahid Tractor court. Noel David showed why he was selected the tournament MVP (Most Valuable Player), scoring 23 points, mostly off precision passes by Aref Aldaba, at the forefront of a fluid Schneider offense. Caroc added 14 and Papa made 10 points for Schneider who were inspired by the presence of company big wigs, among them, Frenchman Franck Pettjean, vice-president for Residential Building and Industrial (RBI) Division, and Ahmed Alnasri.

Schneider and SBAHC set up the knockout final match by beating Prince Naif University and Naghi Trading in a pair of final four matches. Naghi, who led for the most part of the tournament but faded in the knockout stages, defeated PNU 115-195 in the playoff for third place.

The game was played in palpable playoff atmosphere with the army of supporters from each team fighting for every available space around the court and cheering their lungs out for their favorite players. The management and staff of Zahid Tractor Co. Ltd. Central Region too enjoyed the action. Among them were Yousuf Talal Zahid, regional sales manager Caterpillar Machinery Division; Abdul Rahman Dmour, Property Services manager; Rafiq Hamad Yousuf, TVD Trucks sales manager; Ziad Masoud, franchise sales manager, PSD; Abdul Hadi Al-Asmakh, ZTBL adviser, and Essam Hosni, CMD workshop manager.

SBAHC took control in the early going despite the fact that two of their key players, Elmer Pangan and Eusebio Boctot, had an off night. Stepping it up for SBAHC was Ciriacruz, who finished with a night-high 30 points. Using a 1-2-2 defensive pattern to counter SBAHC's three-point shooters, Schneider managed to lead by eight points in the third period only to be under siege in the face of a strong rally by their rivals.

But a side jumper by Eric Encila followed by consecutive fastbreak points by Francis Papa eased the pressure off Schneider until the last three minutes of the fourth quarter when their rivals again came charging back to cut the lead down to four points. Schneider called timeout with 2:35 to play, and in the exchange of baskets that followed a quickrelease three-pointer by Roy Sabino from the corner spot, Joshua Caroc's twisting layup and a free throw proved the marginal points for the winners. De Dela Camara is the Schneider team consultant with Dong Arivan and Allan Consular comprising the coaching staff.

The awards ceremony took place after the final match. ZTBL Chairman Armin Gonzales, meanwhile, thanked the Zahid Tractor management and staff led by Faraj A. Tarhini and Yousuf Talal Zahid for the usual support for this yearly sports event in the Central Region sponsored by Abu Jadayel Co.

Also, Gonzales said Arab National Bank Telemoney has confirmed sponsorship of the next tournament with two categories namely Inter-Company Bonafide and 5-8 Below. The tentative opening date of the new tourney is Aug. 8, Gonzales said.

Gonzales added the ANB sponsorship was facilitated by Jamal Al-Ribh, product and business development head Telemoney Division, Shalimar M. Salomabao, product and customer care unit manager Telemoney Division, and ZTBL league adviser Abdul Hadi Al-Asmakh.
