Say no to violence.
I fully agree with the views expressed by Harun Yahya in his article "Going to war for peace won't help" (Sept. 13). Despite his way too idealistic approach toward global issues, whatever he writes makes sense. I think that violence only begets violence.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should consider adopting a multi-prong strategy. There is no arguing that the menace of terrorism spreading its ugly wings in Iraq and Syria should be extirpated but only bombing militant hide-outs or carrying out precision attacks will not help. These are short-term measures; we need a long-term strategy to counter the deviant ideology. The world has to agree on one thing: Violence is not the solution to any problem.
At least, it is not a permanent solution to the problem of terrorism. Air raids may halt the advance of militants in Iraq and Syria, but will prove highly ineffective against the seeds of hatred these people have already sown in the minds of many.
We can torture such people to render them helpless like the ones in Guantanamo Bay but this will not help in the long run. We should make efforts to educate people. -- Sherry, Jubail
