Sathya Sai Baba Buried with State Honors.

Summary: NEW DELHI (Cihan) - Indian spiritual leader Sri Sathya Sai Baba was buried amid chanting of Vedic mantras on Wednesday and he was laid to rest in Kulwant Hall of the Prashanti Nilayam ashram in his home town Puttaparthi.

Thousands of devotees bid final farewell to the spiritual guru. Among the participants were many politicians and bureaucrats.

Sai Baba's nephew performed his last rites.

The ascetic's body was anointed with oil, herbs and flowers. The body was then covered with a piece of orange cloth.

Sai Baba was buried with full state honors and laid to rest.

However, the burial was not open to the general public, with just immediate family and close associates and some top leaders present in the Kulwant Hall.

Religious leaders from different faiths addressed the devotees prior to the last rite.

While cremation is the most common practice among Hindus, Sai Baba was buried as it is customary for ascetics in the religion.

After four days of state mourning, Wednesday (April 27) is a holiday in the Ananthapur district to allow his followers to pay homage to spiritual guru.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi paid homage to the departed ascetic.

After prolonged illness, 85-year-old Sathya Sai died of cardio-respiratory failure on Sunday.
