Sasikala elected 'Leader of Legislature Party' paving way for swearing in as Chief Minister.

Sweden, Feb. 5 -- AIADMK general secretary V.K. Sasikala was elected today as the Leader of the Legislature party by the AIADMK Members of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (MLA), in the party head office in Chennai, paving the way for her swearing in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

She was unanimously elected by the AIADMK MLAs at a party meeting in Chennai.

It was O Panneerselvam the incumbent Chief Minister proposed the name of V K Sasikala as the leader of AIADMK legislature party leader.

Prior to the election of the Leader of the Legislature Party Leader, incumbent Chief Minister tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

In the resignation letter dated today, addressed to the Governor of Tamil Nadu, O Panneerselvam cited personal reasons for resigning from the post of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Party General Secretary V.K. Sasikala was elected as the party's general secretary in December last year following the death of Jayalalithaa.

Today's election as the Leader of the Legislature Party was a necessary step for Sasikala to be sworn as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

"We are very happy and hope that V.K. Sasikala becomes Chief Minister as she will follow Jayalalithaa's steps", said party members outside AIADMK Headquarters.

"Following the demise of Honorable Amma, it was Thiru. O.Paneerselvam who urged me first to take charge as the GS of AIADMK. It was Paneerselvam who insisted first, that I become the Chief Minister of the State," Sasikala Natarajan after being appointed the head of the legislative party.

According to government sources, VK Sasikala will be sworn in as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on or before February 9.

If she is sworn in as Chief Minister, Ms. Sasikala needs to get elected to the Assembly within six months.
