Sarnies to satisfy Santa; Want to savour the flavour of Christmas before the big day? We test the festive sandwiches on offer.
THREE BIRD ROAST (593 calories), PS3.80, Marks & Spencer PACKED with tasty and chunky meats - turkey, roast chicken and duck. All the flavours work really well. Too much for one but perfect for sharing. And you get the feel-good factor with a donation to housing charity Shelter. HHHH FESTIVE BUBBLE AND SQUEAK (426 calories), PS2.50, Asda A VEGGIE fritter with vegan sage and onion mayo gave it a lovely Christmas taste although the fritter was more akin to spicy falafel rather than traditional bubble and squeak for an off-the-wall filling. Interesting flavours. HHH TURKEY, BACON & STUFFING WITH CRANBERRY SAUCE (412 calories), PS3, Boots FRESH and nutty tasting malted bread that was stuffed with decent slices of lean, moist turkey. The bacon added a nice salty hint and the cranberry a pleasant sweet and fruity finish.
HHHH NO TURKEY FEAST (340 calories), PS3.30, Marks & Spencer THE roasted soya protein looked bland but the filling was lifted by the cranberry chutney and spinach leaves. The soya was firmer than meat and chewy with a deceptively delicate stuffing flavour. HHHH winner THE BIG BEEF (524 calories), PS3, Sainsbury's A MONSTER roll, layered with tender beef with a Yorkshire pud in the middle and slathered with gravy mayo for a gourmet twist, it's the ultimate Christmas feast - once you've worked out how to eat it. Delicious!
HHHHH VEGGIE BUBBLE AND SQUEAK FRITTER (342 calories), PS2.65, Co-op THE sweet potato, spinach and cabbage and sage fritter filling was thin on the ground and unevenly spread so all the fritter was in one part and just cabbage and spinach in the other. Lacklustre.
AHH TURKEY& TRIMMINGS WRAP (509 calories), PS2.50, Tesco A GOOD balance of ingredients that complement each other. The stuffing had a great herby taste. A good sarnie for those who don't like chunks of bread - but it's a bit hefty on the calories. HHH DUCK WITH BITTER ORANGE & JUNIPER RELISH (446 calories), PS3.20, Waitrose A TREAT for the taste buds with fab flavours of zesty orange, juniper and ginger (in the stuffing). We liked the fresh and light taste, and soft and crunchy textures.
HHHH DEEP FILLED FESTIVE FEAST (613 calories), PS1.69, Lidl THIS all-in-one breakfaststyle number isn't for the faint hearted - or those counting calories. It was stuffed with yummy chunks of sausage, turkey and bacon but we found the mayo a little rich. HHH Brie & CRANBERRY CHUTNEY (427 calories), PS2.10, Morrisons THE Brie was good quality - soft and tasty - and the cranberry sweet and slightly tart. Shame about the white bread. It would have made a yummy toastie if it had been brown or granary. HHH
