Sarkozy congratulates DPJ leader Hatoyama for election victory.

PARIS, Aug. 31 Kyodo

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday congratulated Yukio Hatoyama, president of the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, for his party's landslide victory in Sunday's general elections.

The DPJ's victory marks the turning of a new page in Japan's history, the French president said in a letter to Hatoyama, who is poised to become Japan's next prime minister following the DPJ's crushing victory over the long-dominant Liberal Democratic Party.

Sarkozy also said France expects its ties with Japan to deepen under the new government led by Hatoyama and hopes that the two countries will promote understanding on common issues facing the global community, such as aid to developing nations and climate change.
