Santa Cruz spirit: check out the west side's best side--art, pastries, even artisan gin.

Eco-conscious Santa Cruz residents like to shop locally. And on the city's west side, once an industrial neighborhood, this is a delicious proposition. You can sample four local beverages--wine, organic beer, coffee, and artisan gin--and peruse hand-made furniture, clothing, surfwear, linens, and art.

Start with crimpies and coffee on the sunny patio at Kelly's French Bakery, which relocated here three years ago from downtown. Browse the Swift Street Courtyard shops for crafts and wine tasting. At the building's east end is a new organic brewing company offering beer samples. Then head two blocks south on Swift Street for a tiny, chilled shot of Sarticious gin.
