Sand firm to pay ADEQ.

Bluebird Sand LLC of Mount Pleasant (Izard County) has agreed to pay the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality $125,000 for violating the state Pollution Control Act.

The ADEQ found that Bluebird, a sand mining and processing company, discharged wastewater into East Lafferty Creek, a tributary of the White River, after a levee failed at one of Bluebird's wastewater holding ponds. In addition to the November violation, the ADEQ said, Bluebird also discharged wastewater into East Lafferty Creek in December. That discharge resulted in a fish kill.

As part of its agreement with the ADEQ, Bluebird has curtailed some of its operations and must seek permits for certain discharges.
