Salvatore will receive Chandler award.

LANCASTER - R. A. Salvatore will receive the Chandler Reward of Merit at the Thayer Memorial Library on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in the Reference Room.

In 1962, Library Trustee Herbert H. Hosmer initiated an annual lecture to bring a speaker to the library who exemplified excellence in the field of children's and young adult literature. Speakers received an award for their contributions, the Chandler Reward of Merit.

A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, Salvatore, began writing shortly after receiving his bachelor's degree in communications/media from Fitchburg State College. His first break came in 1987, when TSR, publisher of "Dungeons and Dragons," offered him a contract based on a proposal for the Forgotten Realms shared-world setting.

"The Sentinels," the third book in the Stone of Tymora series for teens, written with his son Geno, was published earlier this year. The series is Salvatore's first collaboration with his son, and has Salvatore's Dark Elf character, Drizzt Do'Urden.
