Saleem Shahzad Murder Commission submits report to PM.

ISLAMABAD, January 11, 2012 (Balochistan Times): Journalist Saleem Shahzad Murder Commission on Tuesday submitted its report to the Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani. The Commission finalized its report on Monday (Jan 9) which was signed by all the members. The proceedings of the Commission continued from June 27, 2011 till January 9, 2012. Several meetings of the Commission were held beside a number of meetings to confabulate on certain aspects in the course of inquiry. The Commission called for evidence through public notice in media and examined a large number of witnesses. The Commission also invited suggestions from various personalities related to the subject. Saleem Shahzad Murder Commission was constituted by the Government on June 21, 2011 to inquire into the murder of journalist Saleem Shahzad. The commission comprises Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, President of the Commission who is also judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan, while Mr. Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan, Chief Justice, Federal Shariat Court Mr. Javed Iqbal, P.P.O, Punjab, Binyamin Khan, I.G. Police, Islamabad and Pervaiz Shaukat, President, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) were the members. The Terms of Reference of the Commission are: (a) To inquire into the background and circumstances of abduction and subsequent murder of Mr. Saleem Shahzad; (b) To identify the culprits involved in the abduction and subsequent murder of the said journalist; (c) Recommend measures to prevent recurrence of such gruesome incidents against journalists in future; (d) To probe the matters of conduct which are in derogation of Articles 4, 9, 17, 19 and 19A of the Constitution of the country and to investigate in-depth such background facts. President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalist and a member of the probe commission Pervaiz Shaukat told that the commission finalized its report in six months time after interviews of 41 individuals. He said the government has ensured to take action against the culprits in accordance with the findings of the judicial commission. Pervez Shaukat said the report also includes PFUJ recommendations for journalist community and financial assistance to Shahzads family.
