Sale of inmates' products fetches Dh228,000.

DUBAI - Sales of products crafted by inmates at Punitive and Correctional Establishments of Dubai Police stood at Dh228,000 in the first quarter of the year. In 2010, the sales were valued at Dh871,000.

Major Adel Al Halawi, Director of Supplies, Department of Punitive and Correctional Establishments, said products made by inmates are of high quality and appeal to consumers though are limited in quantity. Their works vary from handicrafts like traditional dhows, tents, women's abayas, toys and paintings to leather works including chairs, handbags and shoes.

He added the 152 male inmates and 41 female inmates played their works at 16 exhibitions staged during the first half of the year.
