Salary survey: increases matched inflation rate.

Those working in the academic sector fared slightly better

This article presents an analysis of the 1276 usable replies which were returned by the membership for our CIC salary survey for 1992. Questionnaires for this survey were distributed late in 1992 along with the membership fee invoices for 1993.

As in previous years, survey replies were separated unopened as received, and were opened and processed by CIC staff at a later date to ensure anonymity to respondents.


Table 1 presents an overview of all usable replies. Changes from 1992 over 1991 for the various categories in the survey must be interpreted with some caution, particularly for the smaller groupings, because of changing participation from year to year. Year of graduation

Table 2 analyzes annual earnings reported by all participants according to year of graduation (bachelor's degree or equivalent) from 1950 to 1992. Data are reported for average, median, quartiles and deciles. Readers could combine Tables 1 and 2 to apply the results to their own circumstances.

Other categories

Tables 3, 4, 5 and 6 extend the analysis by examining various categories within the chemical professions. Please note that data in these tables have been smoothed by means of the five-year moving average technique, e.g., the data reported for 1976 are obtained by averaging all pertinent replies for 1974-1978 inclusive, and the data for 1977 are the averages for 1975-1979.

Comment on participation

The CIC Salary Survey has been published in this format each year since 1975, and recent years have witnessed a steady decrease in participation, both in absolute terms and as a proportion of the membership. Response to the 1992 survey is less than 50% of the numbers who returned the questionnaire in the 1970s. There are significant costs associated with the publication of this annual survey and, as the cost-effectiveness of this membership service is evidently decreasing, the future of the CIC salary survey is in some jeopardy.
