Saint Peter's University Hospital names Benito chair of obstetrics/gynecology.

Saint Peter's University Hospital announced that it has appointed Dr. Carlos Benito as chair of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/GYN), effective immediately.

In a statement, Saint Peter's said that Benito brings a proven track record in maternal health services and will provide clinical and administrative leadership in maternal fetal medicine at Saint Peter's.

Benito comes to Saint Peter's fromAtlantic Health System, where he served as director of maternal fetal medicine for Morristown and Overlook Medical Centers. His relationship with Saint Peter's dates back more than 25 years to his residency and fellowship training, which he completed there.

"As a regional leader in maternal health services, we are committed to achieving the best outcomes for mother and baby, while also improving the birthing experience for our patients. Always open to new technologies, procedures and protocols that can enhance a mother's experience, we seek to evolve our portfolio of maternity services," said Leslie Hirsch, interim chief executive officer and president, Saint Peter's Healthcare System.

"We welcome Dr. Benito back to Saint Peter's and look forward to his contributions as we embark on a new era with a continued focus on personalizing the birthing experience for our patients."

Saint Peter's delivered approximately 5,400 newborns in 2018. The hospital was New Jersey's first state-designated Regional Perinatal Center and provides high-risk maternity care for women experiencing complicated pregnancy and neonatal care for infants born premature or with serious medical issues.
